happy 26 husband

Happy 26th Birthday to my Husband!

You are even more cute and charming now than you were 22 years ago...and that's not an easy feat!

I love growing older with you, and I seriously consider myself the most blessed woman in the world.

Love you more than life!

An award! and some other stuff

Steph at Adventures of Jon and Steph passed on the Love Ya Award to me. This totally made my day!! If you haven't had a chance to read up on the life of her and her husband, you definitely should. They are currently living overseas, and I love getting to hear her stories and see pictures. Thanks so much Steph!!

On a less upbeat note, I am feeling a little overwhelmed these days, which I would like to blame for my lack of blogging these past few days. We have just been so busy lately. I am absolutely loving house hunting. It is so fun to search and dream and plan with my husband...and we love getting to go see houses! It does take up a lot of time, though.

If that wasn't enough, we've also got marathon training. For me, marathon training causes the most anxiety (I am scared to death of our 15 miler scheduled for this weekend), but it also brings such joy and accomplishment. However, it also takes up so much time! I feel like if we aren't running, we're house hunting, and if we aren't house hunting we're running! I'm loving both things so much, and if that were all I needed time for it would be great.

But, of course it's not. Really the thing that is mostly causing me to be overwhelmed is applying for a new job. As you all know, I'm currently a nanny. When we got back home from Thailand, it was so late in the summer that I wasn't able to get a teaching job, so I took this nanny job as a sort of transition job. It would give me time to get adjusted back to life in the States, without having an ultra stressful, time consuming job. It has been really great for me.

Now I think I'm ready to move on. I recently told H's mom that I would be applying for a teaching job, and that I would not be able to continue caring for H past this summer. I was so worried about telling her for fear that she would be upset and wouldn't have any other option for him. She took it really well, however, and I was so glad that I talked to her about it. My primary reason for wanting to teach is that I really want to use my degree. J and I plan on trying to start a family probably about 3 or so years from now. When we have a baby I don't want to work full time. So, if I'm going to teach at all before the time our children get older, it has to be now!

One issue in getting a job has to do with where we live. We live in a small city that is surrounded by little tiny cities. The closest larger city to us is about a 45 minutes drive. It was in that large city that I did my student teaching. I absolutely LOVED my student teaching. I loved the school district and the people I worked with. I was offered a job there at the end of the semester, but I was unable to take it because we were moving to Thailand. I think that I could probably get a job there now if I wanted it, but I just really do not want to have that long of a commute. Teaching already takes up so much time outside the classroom...I really don't want to have almost two hours of driving on top of that.

I also don't want to teach in one the tiny towns surrounding our city. I know I probably need to be open to whatever I can get, but I just really don't want to teach in a super small town, and any of those would be 20+ minutes of driving each way as well. So, I really want to apply and get a job in the actual city that we live in. I'm just so scared. I'm scared of trying to get my application and resume and everything together. What if I forget something? What if my resume isn't good enough? I'm also scared of getting an actual interview. I know that sounds crazy, but I have been out of the "real world" for two years now - first a year in Thailand, then a year staying at home as a nanny. I'm afraid I've forgotten how to be in the professional world. Because of this I'm also afraid of actually getting a job. But, I'm also afraid of not getting a job. I really want to teach. If I don't get a job in the town we live in, and I haven't applied anywhere else I'll be so disappointed, and I have no idea what I would do then.

I'm so sorry to just spill all of this, but I think I just needed to vent. One trait that I really dislike about myself is how I sometimes let fear rule over me. Because I'm afraid of all of these things, I've just been avoiding it all. I'm afraid of failing in all of these areas so I just don't do anything. I know I have to just make myself do it, and try to get past the uncertainty, but it's just so hard for me.

Anyway, thanks for letting me get all of that out. It always feels better to "talk" things out. I may be a little absent for the rest of this week. Thursday is J's birthday, and I'm working on doing some special things for him, so with all of the things going on that I've already mentioned, I won't have much time to post or comment. I'm thinking about you all though, and I'm still trying to keep up with reading! I hope you all have a great week. We're going to look at a few more houses after work today, one of which I'm pretty excited about based on what we've been told about it. You never know until you get inside, however. We learned that the hard way!

excitement is brewing!

I'm getting so excited! For months J and I have been obsessed with looking for houses, even though we knew we couldn't buy yet because we're stuck in a lease. Then, if you remember this post, you know that we started having doubts about whether we should buy right now at all.

After much deliberation, we've officially decided to go ahead and buy! We've decided that we're going to look for an older house that we can update over the next year or so. It'll be easier on the budget and should promise a bigger profit when we decide to sell in several years. I'm so excited! We have a few picked out that we really like, but we haven't seen the inside of them yet.

We're currently in the pre-qualification process, and we have our first appointment with our realtor tomorrow! I can't wait to no longer be living apartment life.

And little Olive can't wait to have her very own yard to run around in:)

Happy Friday to everyone!

Do it! Do it! Do it!

- start my skirt for Jessica's sewing class
- start my scrapbook for Thailand (waaayyy overdue)
- wash our running clothes
- get application materials ready - resume, cover letter etc.
- start planning for husband's birthday
- clean up our apartment
- give Olive a bath

First things first. I'm taking the "I'm a procrastinator" off of my profile. If I stop labeling myself maybe it will stop being true.

Weekend Recap

Ok, so just a warning - this post could be a little long-winded, but I promise to try and keep it as short as possible!

So, the best weekend ever started off kind of low-key on Friday night. J and I did our usual driving around town looking at houses, then we drove through our run route for the next morning because we had never been on those particular roads before. Finally, we had a dinner full of carbs (aka pizza and spaghetti) before packing and hitting the sack fairly early.

Saturday morning we woke up bright and early at 5:05am (every five minutes count:). We hopped out of bed, got dressed for the run, and headed out by 5:45. The first three or four miles were a little slow getting going. It didn't get light as fast as we expected, so we ended up on a major highway...with no shoulder...in the dark...for about a mile. Also in the dark, J was leading us, and he tripped over a huge wire fence thing that was laying on the ground. It was so dark we couldn't see anything, but thankfully he was okay aside from a small toe injury. Anyway, on we went. We decided to take a route through some very rural areas of Stillwater so that we could try running on some gravel and dirt rather than cement. This worked out pretty well for us, except when the occasional car would pass and stir up all the dust from the gravel. I think it was much easier on my knee, however, and I had very little pain during the run. Praise the Lord! Our last stop for water was at 10 miles, and I was actually feeling pretty good. By mile 11, however, I was really feeling the pain. Or should I say "not feeling the pain." My legs were pretty numb, and I was just focusing on putting one foot in front of the other. This only intensified for the final three miles, and then of course we had to add that extra .1 onto the end to make it an official half marathon distance.

I realized at the end why I run. Let me tell you...at about mile 12 I was really starting to doubt my reasoning. "Why am I putting myself through this?" I kept thinking. The emotion and feeling of accomplishment after pushing myself to the limit never fails to amaze me at the end of a long run. J and I basically fell into each others arms in celebration of our second half marathon finish:)

We didn't celebrate for long, however, because it was about 8:30am, and we had to book it to get Olive packed up and to the day care by 9. She wasn't too happy to leave us, but her best friend Sophie was also staying the weekend there so that eased her pain a bit:)

Sad to say the next few hours consisted of me going from the bed to the bathroom and back to the bed again over and over... and over. I don't know what on earth my stomach was so distraught about, but oh my gosh it was terrible. I wanted to badly for it to just go away so that i could get ready and finally get away with husband. I was actually able to down a waffle and eggs that my thoughtful husband worked so hard on, as well as about 20 pepto bismal tablets.

Eventually we got all ready and hit the road. We made a quick stop at chick fil a for him and Panera for me, then headed on to OKC. First stop in OKC - couples massage!! Oh, it was glorious! I can't really explain the kind of leg pain I have after a long run, but it's pretty intense. The only thing I could think of when I got up from the massage was how I felt like I had traded my old legs in for a wonderful new pair of pain free legs!

The next few hours we spent napping and relaxing in our hotel room. It had the most wonderful bed...I never wanted to leave. We did drag ourselves out around 6:30 to head to Cheesecake Factory though. Now, let me just say we had totally set ourselves up to wait to be seated. However, I hadn't necessarily set myself up to wait to wait to be seated. We waited about 20 minutes in line just to get to the hostess table, where upon arrival they informed us that we could come back in an hour to actually get a buzzer after which it would be at least another hour before we would be seated. So, what did we do?

We headed over to the mall (right across the parking lot), and made a beeline for Auntie Anne's! We had a coupon for buy one get one free, so we split a couple of those, and had a romantic time at the food court just hanging out:) Finally, we headed back over to CF, recieved our buzzer, and waited and waited.

Let me tell you, it was well worth it just for the avocado eggrolls alone! I could seriously make a meal out of those thing. We also shared an entre of pasta with a garlic cream sauce, mushrooms, peas, sun dried tomatoes, and ....wait for it....bacon. Yes, I ate bacon. Totally unknowingly.

I'm learning and loving more every day about this vegetarian thing. One of the ingredients in this pasta dish that was listed on the menu was pancetta. Sounds harmless enough, no? We even had a discussion that went like this:
Me: what do you think pancetta is?
J: I have no idea. Maybe we could ask them.
Me: Well, it can't be anything too bad right?
J: Yeah, it definitely wouldn't be meat so let's just not worry about it.

We only found out it was meat because after we were finished eating we overheard the table next to us ask what it was, and as my ears perked up to hear the answer she said "italian bacon." Slow spriral downward in my moral. I'm even ashamed to admit that what I realized were the bacon pieces I had thought were slivers of sun-dried tomato so I was purposely making certain that I had one in each bite. And, no I didn't taste bacon the entire time. And, yes, apparently I need to have my tastebuds evaluated. Either way, I just put it out of mind and moved on with our lovely evening...another lesson learned.

We headed back to the hotel where we cuddled up and shared our oreo cheesecake, and soon after fell sound asleep. A perfect end to a perfect Valentine's Day...sickness and all!

The next morning we slept, got ready, and headed out to find something for lunch. We randomly ended up at PeiWei, where we soon realized one of our best couple friends were also having lunch. They had just ordered so they invited us to join them, which resulted in 2 hours of great lunch and an unexpected wonderful time with friends. I loved getting to spend time with them. After lunch we headed to the mall, and I picked up a cute necklace and a pair of headbands (for $1.50!) at Forever 21. We stopped by Fleet Feet to pick up some more shot blocks and sport beans and of course Cold Stone, which we had a coupon for. Next stop: doggie daycare to pick up our baby!

She was so happy to see us, but maybe not as happy as we were to see her. We missed her so much! I felt like we were parents because throughout our time away we kept talking about her, wondering what she was doing and if she was mad at us for leaving her. Luckily she doesn't hold grudges:)

I was having so much fun...just me and husband...that I forgot to snap hardly any photos. I was sad when I realized that I had forgotten. Here's one that we took ourselves before dinner.

Looks like my effort to keep this short didn't work out very well...so sorry and thanks for hanging with me (if you did:)! I have to end this post with some crazy news I recieved after we got home Sunday night. My mom called to tell me that J and I will not be the next ones to bring a baby into our family. Instead, my aunt and uncle will be - I'm getting a new cousin! The crazy part is that my aunt is 42 and my uncle is 48, they already have a 16 year old and a 14 year old, and technically we all thought their family was finished. Apparently not!!

I've really enjoyed reading about everyone's Valentine's day! I hope you all have a great Tuesday. Don't forget to tune into The Biggest Loser tonight:)

love is in the air

I have been such a bad blogger this week! I've just had so much going on, but I know next week will be better!

I don't have much time today either, but I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day! J planned to surprise me with plans this weekend, but since neither of us are very good at keeping secrets, he ended up telling me the day before yesterday! I love having Valentine's Day as the perfect excuse to splurge a little on a romantic getaway with my favorite person. He booked us a hotel room/couple's massage package for tomorrow, and he's taking me to Cheesecake Factory! We haven't done anything like this since we came home from Thailand. I'm so looking forward to getting away, just the two of us. It's like a dream:) Oh, how I love my husband.

BUT, before the fun can begin we have to put in a 13 miler tomorrow morning. This will be the longest we've run since our half marathon last July. I'm a little nervous, but with all the festivities (especially the massage) to look forward to tomorrow afternoon and evening I think I could get through the full marathon! Okay, maybe not. But, I do think it will help my mental state during those last 3 long ones.

This girl isn't quite as excited about Valentine's Day as her parents are. She is spending her first night away from mom and dad at Doggie Day Care. We'll go on a special outing to Petco when we get back to make it up to her.

"Where's the love mom and dad??"

An interview

Sassy Engineer posted this interview game on her blog, and I thought it looked like fun! So here are the questions she sent me...and my answers of course!

1. If someone gave you a million dollars, what would you do with it? (I had that Bare Naked Ladies song in my head "If I had a million dollars")

This is a really hard question. I would put a large amount in savings/investments, support the missionaries who we aren't able to support right now, buy a house, and give the rest away (I'd have to figure out who to give it to in particular when the time came! It's a hard decision.) Oh, and definitely go on a vacation, but I'm not sure where to. There are so many places we want to go!

2. What 5 things could you not live without?

1. My relationship with God - my hope in Christ gets me through the toughest days
2. My husband - I can't imagine my life without him.
3. My family
4. Olive
5. Running

3. What actress would you want to play you in a movie about your life?
Probably Reese Witherspoon. I think she is so beautiful, and I always love her movies. Also, I really admire how she seems really down-to-earth and she tries to stay out of the public eye.

4. What has been the most defining moment in your life so far?

The day I accepted Christ as my savior and Lord of my life was my most defining moment. Nothing else compares because that moment made me who I am and defined the purpose of my life.

5. When did you know your hubby was the one?
I told my best friend that I was going to marry J about 2 months after I met him. I just knew he was absolutely perfect for me...and me for him. We become close friends soon after meeting each other. A year later he decided that he wanted to date me (woohoo!). Two years later he asked me to marry him. One year later we were married! I seriously would have waited for him forever.

If you would like to play along here are the directions:
1. Leave me a comment & your e-mail address saying, "Interview me." If you dare.
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. (I get to pick the questions).
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions. (You get to choose the questions.) The first five 'askers' get the interview!

Come on - it's fun!!! :)

Catching up

This may be a really random post. I feel like I'm so behind on posting from the last few days. I've just been really busy, and I haven't had time to keep up!

I know I still haven't posted about last weeks 10 mile long run. If you've read my profile you know that I tend to to put things off sometimes. I think I've just been avoiding writing about it because it was so not pretty. Now I've already gotten in another long run, a 7 miler this weekend, so I suppose I'll just do a short recap of each! The 10 miler was rough for a number of reasons.

1. I WAY overdressed. I knew it might get up to 60 degrees before we got back, but it was supposed to be in the low 40's when we left. I was able to shed my long sleeve by mile 2, but I was stuck in tights till the bitter end. It was so hot!!
2. I had serious knee pain and my legs felt like lead by mile 4.
3. We took a terrible route and were therefore dodging cars and curbs the entire way.
4. We tried Gu for the first time and we both nearly gagged. I could not get the taste out of my mouth!
Let's just say that by the last half mile it was all I could do to keep moving. We finished with a 10 minute mile average, which I wasn't too proud of, but at the same time I was just happy we finished!

This past weekend's run went much better. We took a much better/smarter route, and I dressed appropriately in a tank top and shorts. The weather was glorious! We tried sport beans on this one, and they were delish! I could seriously just eat them like candy! The only downside to this week was the wind. We fought it hard for at least half the run. It's good for us to get a little weather resistance though. On the upside, however, absolutely no knee pain! This was a first for the last few weeks of running. It felt so nice to just run with no pain!

On to other topics! Last week was really a great week all around, but two major events happened that just really lit up my days! First, on Wednesday this girl called me on skype:

This is P'Dew. You've heard me mention her before. She was my best friend in Thailand, and I love and miss her so much! So, I was sitting at our computer working on the budget Wednesday morning, and suddenly my screen lights up with her call! I hadn't talked to her other than by email since we left Thailand, so I was so excited!! She called during Henry's nap time so we got to talk for about an hour and a half! She really is one of the most faithful girls I've ever met, and she is so passionate about Christ. I wish everyone could meet her.

The next fun event happened on Thursday morning when I was walking out the door to go get Henry. J, aka - my adorable and loving husband, met me with a bouquet of flowers and a bagel from Panera! I just love when he does totally unexpected, thoughtful things like that. He had left for work early so that he could go get them and surprise me! Ahhh....to be loved:)

So sorry for the randomness; I'm not feeling in tip-top shape today. I've had lots of throat pain all day, so I'm hoping that gets better by tomorrow. Husband is cooking us a tasty dinner of pita pizzas while I lounge on the couch watching the Grammys. I think I might be the luckiest girl in the world. And I'm not biased at all:)

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and enjoy the last few hours!

Thanks dad

My dad is a nature fanatic. He sent me this little guy in an email today. Totally made my morning even brighter.

His mother was killed by a car, but they were able to rescue him by c-section.

Chillin' in his incubator

This little guy would make such a fitting companion for little Olive....at least for awhile:)

I'm off to clean house and plan a lovely dinner for my love. The last couple of days have been busy, but I hope to be back to post more later today!

a roller coaster...

is what I feel like I've been on lately when it comes to house buying.

J and I are in our third year of marriage. The first year that we were married, we lived in an apartment. We didn't want to get tied down by buying a house because we knew we were interested in going overseas. Our second year of marriage was spent living in Thailand. Coming home from Thailand , we were lucky to be able to find a decent apartment due to only being able to shop online.

Since we got back to the States last July, we've gradually become more and more discontent with our apartment. We've been itching to live somewhere with more privacy and somewhere that we can paint, decorate etc. We've kind of had the mindset that we're at the stage of life in which we "deserve" to buy a home. Most of our friends already have houses...as well as children! It's kind of become a sort of entitlement issue in some ways.

Within the last few months we've really started working toward getting a house. We've been saving much more money than we were before, and we spend tons of time looking at houses, talking about houses, watching house shows. We even go to open houses every Sunday afternoon. We've completely adopted the mindset that we will be buying a house in the coming months, and be ready to move in when our lease is up in July.

We felt like we had thought through the financial side of it all as well. We've gotten on a savings plan which we felt like would put us in a fairly good place to be able to buy, and we felt strongly that it would be much better to just go ahead and buy so that we're not throwing money away on rent every month.

Then last night we went over to our friends' house to have dinner. They have been married for three years, and they just had a baby about 6 months ago. They had their house built a couple of years ago, and we absolutely love it. We love everything about the house and their neighborhood. We've gotten tips from them and information about building a house instead of buying an existing one, and we've really been thinking that that's what we would like to do. Last night we were basically "drilling" them on all things regarding house building and buying. They are always so great to answer all of our questions, give us advice, and share their experience with us. In discussing everything with them last night, however, they shared with us how they feel about the financial side of things regarding their house and how they would have done things differently if they had known what they know now. They pointed out some things that really made J and I think...and begin to reevaluate this decision. Many of the facts that they talked about really made sense to me. Without making this really long by sharing all of the details, I'll just say that they challenged us to really make sure that we feel that it's the best financial decision for us to buy right now.

J and I spent all last night and most of this morning discussing all of this. I feel like we've done a complete 180 from where we were this past weekend when we were out searching for our dream home. We don't necessarily want to completely change our plan based on one conversation with one couple. We still need to discuss everything more and settle on a final decision, but right now it's looking like we may be "dreaming" of buying a house for another couple of years. The good news is that at least we can get out of this apartment and find a rent house - that will be at least a little bit of an upgrade on the things that are bothering us. And, so far in the midst of the disappointment of thinking that we might not buy now, I really do feel a peace about this decision. So...here's to the joy of doing what you think is the "right" thing instead of what you really want to do! (Can you sense the sarcasm?)

On a lighter note....wish me luck today as I'm off to the salon to get a haircut!! If you read two posts below, you would know that there's little chance that I'm keeping the same cut that I've had for the last six weeks. In fact, this months hair adventure involves a little less scissor action...and a lot more patience! Yep, that's right, I'm growing it out. My stylist is going to think I've lost it considering I've gone with a new, shorter do the last 4 times I've gone in there!

I needed to get these "house thoughts" on paper this morning b/c it's really weighing on me, but I still plan to post a weekend update later, which will mainly feature the brutality that was our 10 mile run on Sunday. It was not pretty:(
